A thrilling climb through icy conditions
After our mountain guide went over the equipment and safety instructions, we split into pairs: while one climbs, the other belays, keeping a close eye on every move. Once I’d introduced myself to my climbing partner for the day, the excitement started to build… it was time to dive into thisice climbing adventure.

I spot the first holds and strike the ice axe—a bit hesitantly. It takes a few tries before I manage to anchor it securely in the icefall. The hardest part is finding the right technique to secure each foothold, including the crampons and ice axes. Every movement requires precision and commitment: one wrong move, and losing your balance is guaranteed.
Little by little, we find our rhythm, our confidence grows, and the icy wall becomes a real testing ground. We observe, we test, we choose the best route to make our way to the summit. The climb is slow, punctuated by our breathing, the cold that gradually numbs our hands, and the adrenaline that surges with every hold. A few glances at my partner are enough to exchange advice and encouragement, strengthening the bond of this two-person climb.

Once we reach the top, we take a moment to savor the view and the satisfaction of having reached the top of the icefall. Then it’s time to head back down. I glance at my partner to signal that I’m ready, and off we go. Step by step, we begin the descent, retracing the icy face I had just climbed. One last moment suspended between vigilance and pleasure, to conclude this frosty experience… with a smile on my lips.

A spectacular natural setting
As soon as you arrive at the site, an almost surreal atmosphere envelops you. Although man-made, the Bessans icefall blends perfectly into the winter landscape. Nestled in the shadow of the Pointe de Tierce, it remains sheltered from the sun, ensuring high-quality, durable ice throughout the winter. From the cross-country ski trails, you can see it standing proudly next to the biathlon stadium: a sight that naturally draws the eye.
All around, the larch trees, frozen in place beneath the snow, enhance the area’s quiet, unspoiled atmosphere. Suspended a few meters above the ground, you feel both tiny and fully connected to the mountain. Far from the hustle and bustle, you move through a bubble of focus and calm, lulled by the crunch of ice beneath your crampons. An immersive, almost meditative experience in the heart of winter.
Ice climbing: an adventure you'll want to experience again and again
Ice climbing is never repetitive—and that’s precisely what makes it so appealing. The ice is constantly changing, shaped by the wind, the cold, and the weather: every day, every season, it offers a new texture, new contours, and a different route to climb. No matter how many times you climb that waterfall, it will never be quite the same.
It’s an ever-evolving experience, a blend of observation, adaptation, and wonder. So if you’re looking for an extraordinary experience this winter—one that’s both physically challenging and contemplative—strap on your harness, put on your crampons, grab your ice axes… and let yourself be captivated by the icy magic of the vertical world.
