Forts en Lumière: the new arts festival in L’Esseillon

From July 2 to 5, 2026, the forts of the Esseillon will serve as the backdrop for a unique, free event in Haute Maurienne Vanoise. Light installations, sound art, immersive shows, video mapping, music, and artistic performances will take over this historic site between Aussois, Avrieux, and La Norma.

Thursday, July 2 through Sunday, July 5, 2026

An arts festival in the heart of the Esseillon Forts

Making stone sing and light dance: that is the promise of this first edition of Forts en Lumière.

Built in the 19th century to defend the French-Italian border, the Esseillon forts are transformed into a vast canvas for artistic expression during the festival.

In Aussois and Avrieux, the Redoute Marie-Thérèse and Fort Victor-Emmanuel (two of the five forts of the Esseillon) are hosting contemporary installations, light shows, sound installations, and immersive performances.

A unique way to explore this iconic site in the Haute Maurienne Vanoise, combining history, culture, and a touch of magic.

A Fresh Look at the Forts of the Esseillon

With "Forts en Lumière," the forts become much more than just a historic site.

The festival marks a new chapter in the cultural life of Aussois and Avrieux, transforming these historic sites into spaces for creativity and artistic experiences.

This inaugural edition is part of the European Interreg Alcotra TransiT project, carried out in collaboration with Fort Bard in Italy, with the aim of developing a cross-border artistic program centered on the forts.

The Esseillon forts

A natural rock barrier, the Esseillon Glacial Barrier served as the site for these fortresses, which were built to protect the region from enemies. Although this military stronghold was never the scene of any battles, it is nonetheless steeped in history and was designated a “Historic Monument” in 1983.
