Biathlon-ski wheel: discovery and initiation in Bessans

Biathlon-ski wheel: discovery and initiation

When you think of Bessans, a high-altitude plateau nestled in Savoie, you think of winter with snowshoeing and Nordic skiing. However, this village also offers unique summer activities, including biathlon-ski wheeling. Curious, I jumped at the chance to try this activity. Let me tell you all about it!

An unusual activity

The idea of wheel skis à Bessans for the first time can be intimidating, especially when you're a beginner. At first, I thought it was going to be like winter with cross-country skiing. But in reality, not at all.

Hesitant beginnings...

Asphalt replaces snow, and the idea of falling is more impressive than on an all-white track. So, logically, I equip myself with wrist, knee and elbow protection and, of course, a helmet.

...to a gliding sensation

The balance and coordination required made me a little apprehensive at first. Fortunately, the Bessans instructors know how to put you at ease: after a few technical explanations on posture and movements, some exercises to improve and we were off. The first few minutes were a real challenge, but with perseverance and the advice of the pros, I found myself gaining confidence. Gliding down the slope with a panoramic view of the mountains is an exhilarating feeling that I couldn't have imagined when I was just starting out!

Biathlon-ski wheel: discovery and initiation: The challenge of precision shooting at 50 metres

The challenge of precision shooting at 50 meters

After ski-wheeling, it's time for shooting. A professional is waiting to explain how to use the rifle safely. Shooting at a target 50 meters away a biathlon rifle requires concentration, of course, but also real technique.

The rapid heartbeat after ski-wheeling makes the exercise even more complex. You also have to take into account all the elements around you: wind direction, posture and rifle grip. Every missed shot means redoubling your efforts to control your breathing and refine your accuracy in front of the target. But as soon as the target is hit, what a pleasure!

The exercise is demanding, but also incredibly stimulating. With a bit of practice and patience, I managed to hit a few shots in the center of the target - a proud first!

An unforgettable experience

At the end of the session, tiredness mingled with sincere joy. Trying out ski-wheeling and biathlon at Bessans allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, discover an ultra-ordinary activity, take up a sporting challenge and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

With friendly guidance and a good dose of motivation, you'll make rapid progress and the experience will be a memorable one. Whether you're a beginner or an enthusiast of new activities, you'll leave with unique memories and a taste of accomplishment. So, are you ready to put on your skis and wheels? Bessans awaits your challenge.

Information

Did you know?

The arrival of ski-wheels in the 1970s marked a turning point in the summer training of local and professional athletes. This innovative training method, designed to mimic the movements of cross-country skiing, quickly found its place in the Savoyard mountains.

From the very beginnings of ski-wheeling, Bessans has seen renowned athletes train here to perfect their technique in summer. This is no coincidence: its ideal altitude and well-developed slopes offer perfect conditions for this sport.

In the 1990s, biathlon was added to the range of sports on offer. The introduction of facilities dedicated to rifle shooting made Bessans an essential site for the preparation of French and foreign biathletes.
