Tour d'agglo Modane-Fourneaux trail from above
Between the cool undergrowth of Forniolins and panoramic views over Modane, spend a privileged moment in the calm of a stroll between adret and ubac. A sure-fire way to get away from it all, just a stone's throw from a border town.
Description
Take the path that can also lead you to the aptly named chemin du petit bonheur. Trailers will not be outdone on this route, which promises to be varied. You're also sure to come across mountain bikers who enjoy the playful single tracks.
Chickadees and intrepid squirrels accompany you to the "plateau sportif". Enter the heart of Modane to discover a former border town. A key rail transit hub in the early 20th century, it now offers you a gateway to the Haute Maurienne and access to the Vanoise National Park. What's that timeless building along the Arc? The former Rizerie des Alpes marks your arrival in Loutraz.
Now it's time to take on the Replaton fort, which watches over the town from an altitude of 1,200m. Keep your eyes peeled, as the trail is often home to shy deer. The scent of the Scots pine will intoxicate you on a fine summer's day. Easily traverse the plateau sometimes occupied by a herd of docile cows. A small loop cut through the gullies takes walkers and trailers back to the main descent. Between two switchbacks, can you see the Esseillons forts in the distance? Let your gaze wander to the peaks of the Italian border, so far and yet so near.
On the way back, treat yourself to a gourmet break at the combes campsite before reaching "la clairière". Leave this bubble of well-being behind to reach the Eglise de Fourneaux and its atypical architecture.
