Religious Imagery

Twisted columns, chubby cherubs, wall paintings, baroque altarpieces bursting with gold and colours, the chapels and churches of Haute Maurienne Vanoise contain treasures of baroque art.

Witnesses of a popular mountain faith, about twenty chapels and churches from the 16th century to the present day dot the villages, hamlets and roadsides and paths.

Some are open all year round, for example the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church in Aussois, others only for guided tours (in Avrieux, Val Cenis Lanslebourg and Val Cenis Lanslevillard) but all offer pearls of this Baroque art that was supposed to be a foretaste of heaven.
