Eglise Notre-Dame de l'Assomption (Lanslebourg): free access
Although built between 1820 and 1830, the church remains true to the contrasts of the Baroque spirit: beneath its austere appearance, it conceals a richly decorated interior. Let yourself be surprised by the harmonious cohabitation of masterpieces from different centuries.
Description
The old church, across the street, had become dilapidated and too small, so the locals decided to build a new, larger one: with three naves, the middle one topped by a majestic dome.
But fear not: the past is not so easily wiped clean! The old church has been preserved. It was converted into a school, a courthouse and then a cultural space, which can still be visited today. Fortunately, its furnishings have also been preserved. Once transported to the new place of worship, the four Baroque altarpieces in particular, in polychrome wood and gilded leaf, carved in cembro pine, a coniferous tree very present in the valley, await you...
One village, two churches: come and discover this astonishing cohabitation!
