Want to go skiing in April? Try spring skiing!
What is spring skiing (or ski touring)? It involves climbing toward the peaks with climbing skins attached to your skis, then skiing back down through pristine, untouched terrain.
With the arrival of spring, now is the perfect time to set off on a multi-day adventurewith our mountain guide and explore the valley’s legendary trails.
Today, we’re taking you on a journey to discover one of them: the Haute Route Bessans–Bonneval-sur-Arc, which passes over the summit of Albaron. A 3-day trek through wild, breathtakingly beautiful scenery! See for yourself in the video of our hike, so you can experience these magical moments with us.
Day 1: From Bonneval-sur-Arc to the Carro Mountain Hut
This spring ski tour starts in Bonneval-sur-Arc. It is a authentic village in Haute Maurienne, with a wild, alpine atmosphere: pristine valleys, deep silence, and majestic peaks.
The goal of this first day is the Carro Mountain Hut, perched at over 2,700 meters. The route features a gradual ascent, ideal for getting into the rhythm of this winter hike. Arriving at the refuge, surrounded by glaciers and high peaks, immediately sets the tone: here, we are in the high mountains.
We enjoy the sunset from the terrace—an enchanting scene bathed in pastel and pink hues—before settling in for the night.
Day 2: The Great Carro-Evettes Crossing
At the first light of day, we set off on the longest leg of this three-day spring ski trip: the traverse from the Carro mountain hut to the Evettes mountain hut.
This stage is undoubtedly the most serene: an 18-kilometer traverse through vast glacial plateaus, high mountain passes, and breathtaking views. Spring skiing truly comes into its own here: it’s technical, fluid, and incredibly beautiful.
Spending the night at Les Évettes, facing the vast glacial walls, reinforces that feeling of being far away from everything.
A rare experience, almost timeless.
Day 3: Albaron, an iconic peak, and the descent to Avérole
The final day, and undoubtedly the highlight of these three days of spring skiing: the ascent of Albaron, at an elevation of 3,638 meters . This legendary peak in the region offers a challenging climb that combines physical exertion with alpine commitment.
At the summit, the reward is complete: an exceptional panoramic view of the Italian and French Alps . Then comes the moment we’ve all been waiting for—the descent. A long spring run, often in perfect snow, leading all the way down to the Avérole mountain hut, before reaching the valley and Bessans.
Three days, three mountain huts, one legendary peak: a once-in-a-lifetime experience that every ski touring enthusiast should have at least once.
An Immersion in the Land of Mountaineering
This trek is fully in keeping with the spirit of the Terre d’Alpinisme label, which promotes anauthentic approach to mountaineering: backpacking, self-reliance, respect for the environment, and the pursuit of challenging routes.
Here, there are no ski lifts or crowds. Just the mountain—rugged and majestic—and the unique pleasure of skiing through an unspoiled landscape.
Practical Information and Safety
Ski touring (or spring skiing)is an off-piste activity for which it is strongly recommended that you be accompanied by a mountain guide to ensure your safety.
It is also essential to follow mountain safety rules:
– Plan your route carefully
– Check the weather conditions, always double-checking the day before and on the day of departure
– Check the BERA (Avalanche Risk Assessment Bulletin)
– Set out equipped with the “triad”: avalanche transceiver + shovel + probe
Since the route from Bonneval to Bessans via the Albaron is a high-altitude mountain trail, you must already be an experienced skier to embark on this adventure.
