Baroque art in Haute Maurienne Vanoise
High place of the baroque art
Push open the doors to discover treasures of Baroque art
The churches of Haute Maurienne Vanoise are particularly recognizable with their massive appearance and their "Lombard" style bell tower surmounted by a spire surrounded by four small "bells". If the exterior may seem a little austere, you just have to push the doors to discover treasures of baroque art.
Twisted columns, chubby cherubs, mural paintings, baroque altarpieces bursting with gold and color, the chapels and churches of Haute Maurienne Vanoise reveal flamboyant interiors.
Witnesses of a popular mountain faith, about twenty chapels and churches from the 16th century to the present day dot the villages, hamlets, roadsides and paths.
Some are open all year round, for example the church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Aussois or the one in Val Cenis-Lanslevillard which has recently been completely restored and has magnificent mural paintings. Others are only open for guided tours (in Avrieux and Val Cenis-Lanslevillard for example) but all of them offer nuggets of this baroque art which must have been a foretaste of paradise.
