Traversée des Rois Mages

The Traversée des Rois Mages is a ski-mountaineering event that commemorates one of the oldest ski crossings of the Alps.
The race is open to all ski tourers, regardless of their physical and technical level. This meeting for lovers of ski mountaineering and the mountains in winter is above all a great moment of conviviality accessible to all practitioners of this discipline. Two routes are proposed to link Valfréjus in France to Bardonecchia in Italy.

Apart from the sporting challenge, one “does” the Traversée des Rois Mages for its magical setting.

As far as the eye can see, a white universe, a few sleeping mountain chalets, silence and serenity.

From Valfréjus, the direction is taken towards the Thabor refuge before the descent towards the Re Magi refuge and an arrival at the hamlet of Les Granges in the narrow valley a few steps from Bardonecchia, in Italy.

2 routes are proposed to link Val Fréjus to the Granges de la Vallée Etroite.

  • The routes are marked out after validation by a professional.
  • Participants can either follow these routes independently with their club or with the help of volunteers from the CAF of Modane, Maurienne, Briançon and the CAI.
  • The routes are closed by a guide.

An exceptional hike on a majestic site

Les Rois Mages is a small rocky massif composed of three peaks – Pointe Gaspard 2,808 m, Pointe Melchior 2,948 m, Pointe Balthazar 3,153 m – which stand opposite the Vallée Etroite pass.

The Thabor massif, with its 3,178 m peak, is on the border with the Hautes-Alpes department. Whether you are on a GR5 itinerary or on holiday in Valfréjus, you can hike the trails, spend a night at the Thabor refuge and enjoy the exceptional mountain setting.
