The Variselle fort rises to an altitude of 2118 meters. You will be conquered by the beauty of the panorama (view on the dam and the surrounding summits: the Signal du Grand Mont-Cenis, the Pointe de Ronce...)

Description

It is the largest of the Mont-Cenis works, and is also its command fort. Its pentagonal plan, inspired by the Montalembert architecture, is adapted to the relief with two semi-casemated fire levels (artillery and rifle). The artillery of the Variselle fort consisted of 27 cannons, with a range of 6000 m. These guns were installed in vaulted casemates, open to the rear. The central space of the fort was occupied by a vast underground casemate barracks, which was dug in below the level of the courtyard; it housed the quarters, the powder magazines, the projectile depot, the food store, the infirmary, the bread oven and the various infrastructures necessary for the needs of the Italian infantry called upon to carry out operations in the sector.
