Ski mountaineering World Cup

2 days

to reach

the summits

A Ski Mountaineering World Cup is a gathering of racers from all over the world who come to compete in different events: individual, sprint, vertical race.

More than a hundred riders are expected to attend this World Cup round. About twenty nationalities will be represented with riders coming mainly from Europe and Asia. This Ski Mountaineering World Cup in Aussois will allow Haute Maurienne Vanoise to shine on an international scale.

Indeed, the Maurienne and more generally the Alps, are ideal places for both recreational and competitive ski mountaineering. There are many ski touring routes and the landscapes they cross are grandiose and magnificent.

The Vanoise National Park is a good example to mention! Always in respect of nature, the mountaineer skier leaves only the imprint of his tracks in the snow….

Why a ski mountaineering world cup in Aussois?

Aussois already hosts major events such as the Transmaurienne Vanoise in summer (mountain bike race labelled Union Cycliste Internationale) or the Grande Odyssée in winter (dog sled race with mushers from all over Europe).

Aussois also hosts ski mountaineering events such as “La Trace du Châtelard“, a race created in 2014 that has continued to raise its profile and has become a benchmark event in the world of ski mountaineering. Relying on its exceptional natural assets, the dynamism of its local practitioners and the expertise acquired thanks to the Trace du Châtelard, the village resort of Aussois organised the FFME French Ski Mountaineering Championships on 12 & 13 January 2019. 330 riders competed in the individual race and 130 in the sprint.

These 2 days of competition were experienced as a full-scale test for the world event on 20 and 21 December 2019.

Hosting a World Cup round is the opportunity to highlight a region, Haute Maurienne, but also to raise awareness of a discipline that is currently booming and that concerns more than 150,000 skiers in France.

The entry of ski mountaineering into the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in 2020 will be a showcase for the discipline.

THE
ROUTES

SPRINT

The Sprint race is run on a very short course, about 80 metres of difference in altitude.

It is nevertheless an extremely technical and spectacular discipline since everything happens in front of the spectators… The course requires a climb, conversions, loosening, a walk part before a last section in the climb, a descent and a finish sprint in the skater’s step.

All in less than 3 minutes!

INDIVIDUAL

Make way for the adventure field, the mountain for the individual race.

It is necessary to be complete: endurance to resist distance and altitude difference (1300 to 1500m), handling technique, without forgetting the qualities of descenders. Versatility of rigour to distinguish the best skier.

VERTICAL RACE

A Vertical Race is a special ski mountaineering event consisting in climbing as quickly as possible a climb of about 1,000 metres of denivellation.

Many activities will take place around this competition in order to satisfy the public and keep them on site. Indeed, spectators will be able to learn about many disciplines and taste local specialities.

A partner village will also be set up near the start/finish areas.
