Splitboarding at La Norma?

While splitboarding has been growing for a few years, La Norma has a real history with this activity. From winter 2016-2017 it has been possible to rent splits at the resort. New snow sports have always had their place in La Norma with enthusiasts looking for new sensations. The resort welcomed many snowboarders in the 90’s. Telemark and Skwal have also been, and still are, very visible on the slopes. The neighbouring resort of Valfréjus is also where speed riding took off. Splitboarding was therefore an obvious choice for the snowboarding enthusiasts of La Norma who quickly got into this new activity. Today, La Norma is one of the few resorts to offer introductory courses and split trips with guides or with the ESF.

“What is splitboarding? “

For beginners, a splitboard is a snowboard that you can split for a “ski touring” type climb (free heel at boot level when climbing and skins under the boards to avoid sliding). At the top, you fasten the boards back together and it’s off for some powdery rides on sections which can’t be accessed by the ski lifts.

This practice appeared at the end of the 80’s and was still relatively unknown until recently, but it attracts more and more snowboard enthusiasts and keeps on growing. The mindset remains that of original snowboarding: a love for powdery snow, for the purity of nature and wide-open spaces. And thanks to the splitboard, no more exhausting treks with a snowboard on your back and snowshoes or approach skis stuck to your boots!
